Student to die for couple murder

A court in Mymensingh yesterday convicted a college student and sentenced him to death for killing a couple in the district town in 2014. The convict is identified as Golam Mostafa Mithu, 25, fifth year student of Fashion Design at Mymensingh town's Rumdo Institute of Modern Technology and hailing from Kotchandpur upazila of Jhenidah.
According to the prosecution, Abdul Haque, 70, a retired government official and his wife Raihatunnesa, 65, a retired school teacher, were hacked to death by the convict over previous enmity in their house at Akua Gorur Khoar area in the district town on July 12, 2014.
He got acquainted with the couple through his sister, who used to be a tenant there two years ago. On several occasions, he demanded Tk 50,000 in loan from the couple to pay his college fees.
Mithu went to the couple's house on July 12 around 10:00pm and asked for the money again.
Being refused, he started slashing Raihatunnessa with a machete in her chest and neck. When Abdul Haque came to her rescue from the adjacent room, Mithu attacked him with the machete.
Neighbours rushed to the spot on hearing screams, and caught Mithu when he was trying to run away.
The neighbours then found the bodies lying in a pool of blood on the first floor of the house.
The victims’ son Hasibul Haque filed a case in this
connection.
After investigation, Sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station Shibirul Islam submitted chargesheet against Mithu on September 9, 2016.
After examining the records and witnesses, Mymensingh District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Amir Uddin handed down the verdict.
