Two people arrested on charge of murdering Mahamuda Khanam Mitu, wife of Police Superintendent Babul Akter, gave confessional statements admitting their involvement in the murder before a Chittagong court yesterday.
Earlier in the day, at a press briefing at the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) headquarters, CMP commissioner Iqbal Bahar told reporters, “The duo took part in the murder directly. Washim shot Mahamuda and Anwar worked as member of rescue team of the gang.”
Senior Judicial Magistrate Harun-or-Rashid recorded statements of Washim and Anwar after DB (detective branch) of police produced them before the court. Washim hails from Rangunia while Anwar from Fatikchhari in Chittagong.
According to court sources, the duo, in their statements, said they were hired to kill Mahamuda Khanam Mitu by a man named Musa. However, police did not give any details after completing of the confession of Wasim and Anwar before the court that started at 2pm and concluded at 9:45pm yesterday. The court at first recorded the statement of Washim and then recorded the statement of Anwar. Earlier, at the CMP headquarters press briefing, Police Commissioner Iqbal Bahar said, “A total of 7/8 people took part in the killing mission. They are professional criminals. We have been able to arrest the two. We would get the identity of others and our drive is going on to nab all.”
When he was asked where the police identified the motive behind the murder, he said “We have nabbed them. After arresting all the criminals and at the end of the investigation, we will be able to give all
details.” When asked about the interrogation of Babul Akter for 15 hours on Saturday, the CMP chief said “I would not call it an interrogation. It was a discussion with the plaintiff for a long time.”
“It is certain that this was a target killing. They are an organised gang. But who, how and why the murder was committed can be told only at the end of the investigation,” said Iqbal Bahar.
The CMP chief also said police did not find any connection of two other arrestees -- Abu Nasor Gunno and Md Shah Jaman alias Robin – in the murder incident. Police had quizzed them by taking on seven-day remand. Police sources said some other detainees were also being quizzed over the murder incident.
Police sources said, among the three motorcyclists who took part in the murder, Abu Musa was driving the motorcycle, another rider Nabi stabbed Mahamuda and Washim, who was at the back of the motorcycle, shot Mahamuda. A man named Ethesamul Haque Bola supplied arms to the murderer, said sources.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia yesterday said Police Superintendent Babul Akter was interrogated lawfully.
While addressing a cloth distribution programme among poor people at Dholaipar High School ground in the capital, the DMP chief said, “SP Akter is the plaintiff in the murder case and it was normal that an investigation officer would interrogate a complainant as part of the investigation.”
The investigators asked the SP to come to the Detective Branch(DB) office for interrogating, the DMP boss said. “But he (Babul) wanted the police to send him a vehicle to reach the office. As per his request, we sent the vehicle early Saturday to bring him,” the police commissioner said.
Meanwhile Mosharraf Hossain, father-in-law of Babul, yesterday alleged that some media had carried out ill-intentioned reports only to divert the investigation of the murder case. He also alleged that the investigation was not being carried out in the proper manner. Mosharraf, also a retired officer-in-charge of police, however hoped that the real killers would be arrested. He also urged law enforcers not to kill any accused person in cross fire. “I hope no innocent would be harassed in the process,” he added.
On early Saturday, Babul Akhter was taken to the Detective Branch office in the capital for ‘interrogation’ over his wife’s murder. “Deputy Commissioner (Motijheel division) Anwar Hossain along with Officer In-charge of Khilgaon Police Station Moinul Hossain came to our house around 1:05 am and took Babul with them saying that the IGP wanted to talk with him,” Md Mosharraf Hossain, father-in-law of SP Babul, told reporters. As the family was unable to contact Babul, the incident spread various rumours. Babul returned home at around 5 pm on Saturday after 15 hours.
On June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, 32, wife of Police Superintendent Babul Akter, was stabbed and shot dead at the GEC intersection in Chittagong near their home by a group of assailants riding a motorcycle, as she went there to put her son on a school bus.
