A suspected drug trader died in police custody in Mymensingh on Friday night. Pranta Chandra Dey, 21, son of Robi Chandra Dey of Gulpukurpar area of Mymensingh town, died at in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment there after his arrest.
Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotowali Model Police Station, said police arrested Pranta from Durgabari Mandir area along with 15 Yaba tablets on Friday afternoon.
Later, as Panta fell sick in the evening he was admitted to MMCH where he died at around 9 pm.
Police said Pranta was a drug-addict and earlier he was arrested several times on charge of drug trading.
However, his family members denied the allegations and demanded investigation into his mysterious death.
Pranta’s elder brother Mithu Chandra Dey said “Pranta was not an addict or involved in drug trading.
He was totally fit and has no such complications like heart disease.”
Pranta went out of the house around 5:00pm on Friday, he added, lamenting that their family was informed about his detention in the evening.
“When my aunty and younger sister went to the police station in the evening, they found Pranta lying unconscious on the floor at the police station,” Mithu said.
Informed, the brother went to MMCH and found Pranta dead.
“My brother might have been tortured to death,” Mithu alleges demanding fair investigation into the death.
Police denied torturing Pranta in police custody.
Pranta might have died of heart attack, the Officer-in Charge said.
The cause of the death would be known after getting the autopsy report, said he.
Dr Dilip Kumer Sarker, duty doctor of the hospital’s emergency department, pronounced him “brought dead”, said the department’s office assistant Helal Uddin.
