Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif yesterday reiterated that the BNP-Jamaat nexus is resorting to secret killings and terrorist activities across the country in a bid to destabilise the government by tarnishing the country’s image. “BNP-Jamaat activists are trying to spread confusion among the people by carrying out secret killings. But they would not be able to succeed, eventually. The present government will curb these terrorist activities as it did during the BNP-Jamaat sponsored three-month long violent programmes,” the AL leader said.
“We want to assure the people of Bangladesh that the Sheikh Hasina government will be able to stop secret killings soon,” said Hanif, also a ruling AL lawmaker, while addressing a joint meeting organized by Dhaka City Unit AL. The meeting was organized to discuss the preparations for the party’s 67th founding anniversary programme. HAnif also criticised BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for calling upon the rich people of the country to come forward to help the poor people of the society. Hanif said such statement doesn’t fit Khaleda Zia as she had earlier misappropriated money of orphans.
About reaching any possible political consensus with the BNP, Hanif said, “As long as the BNP would not cut ties with the Jamaat, there would not be any understanding with them. “We also want to reach an understanding with the BNP over national issues, but they will have to cut ties with the Jamaat first,” he said. Addressing the same programme, Food Minister advocate Qamrul Islam said, “We should not blame the law enforcers for the ongoing target killings. The government will curb these militant activities in the way it is done in other developed countries. We believe such secret killings will be stopped soon.”
