Leaders of the 14-Party Alliance told their counterparts in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) yesterday that if they wanted to have a consensus with the government, they would have to first sever ties with the Jamaat and stop the secret killings aiming to destabilise the government.
Accusing the BNP-Jamaat combine of carrying out militant attacks across the country, the 14-Party Alliance leaders called upon the pro-liberation forces as well as the people to be united to resist the BNP-Jamaat activities.
Leaders and workers of the AL-led 14-Party Alliance started gathering in different parts of the city from 2.30pm yesterday to make their human-chain programme a success. The countrywide programme was organised from 3pm to 4pm to protest against the secret killings and terrorist activities in the country.
In Dhaka, the human chain extended from Gabtali to Jatrabari crossing. The central leaders of the alliance had gathered at Bangabandhu Square near the AL headquarters on Bangabandhu Avenue. The human chain sparked massive traffic jams in different parts of the city.
Addressing the programme, AL presidium member and alliance spokesperson Mohammad Nasim said that if BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia wanted an understanding with the government, she would first have to sever ties with Jamaat. “If you (Khaleda) want to sit with the government, you’ll have to stop killing people.
