Student drowns in KU pond
KHULNA: A student of Khulna University (KU) drowned in a pond of Khan Bahadur Ahsanaullah Hall of the university on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Shahriar Hossain Shanta, a first year student of Physics department of the university. Witnesses said Shanto along with some of his friends went to the pond to take a bath around 3pm. Suddenly he slipped and drowned into the pond water. Later, locals found the floating body of Shanto in the pond around 6pm.
He was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Deputy commissioner Mostafa Kamal confirmed the incident.
6 jailed for drug peddling
SAVAR: A mobile court on Sunday sentenced six people to six months imprisonment and another to one year for their involvement in drug peddling.
The convicts were identified as Alam, Halan Miah, Rana Hamid,  Ripon Miah, Mamun Hossain and Ayub Ali
Police said on a tip-off, a team of the DB (Detective Branch) conducted a drive in different areas in Ashulia and arrested five from Kandi Bhakurta and Solmasi village and another from Gajirhat area while they were selling drugs and liquor. Later, they were produced before a mobile court of Executive Magistrate and Savar upazila nirbahi officer Kamrul Hassan Mollah who handed down the punishment.
Six edible oil factories sealed
CHITTAGONG: A mobile court sealed off six unauthorized edible oil factories in different areas under city's Baizid thana yesterday.
Executive Magistrate of Chittagong District Administration Tamim Al Yeamin conducted the anti-adulteration drives and sealed off the factories for producing and marketing edible oil without approval from the concerned authorities, District Administration sources said. The court also punished five factory owners with different terms in jail and fined the other one TK 1.5 lakh on the same ground.
