A tribunal yesterday convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing his wife in 2012.
The condemned convict was identified as Nimai Chandra Barman, 31, of Baroaulia village in Atoari upazila. The tribunal also fined him Tk 25,000.
According to the prosecution, Nimai Chandra, who used to torture his wife Sonali Rani Sampa, strangled Sonali to death on November 12, 2012 and hanged the body from a mango tree in a bid to prove that she committed suicide.
Karuna Kanta Roy, father of the victim, filed a murder case with Atoari Police Station on the following day.
Dilip Kumar Roy, sub-inspector of Atoari Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted chargesheet against six people including Nimai and his parents before the court on March 25, 2013.
After examining the records and nine witnesses, district Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge MA Nur passed the order acquitting the other accused as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
