Professor M Maniruzzaman Miah, a noted educationist and former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, died at a hospital in the capital yesterday, reports UNB. He was 81. Maniruzzaman, who had long been suffering from old-age complications, breathed his last at Square Hospital around 11:45am, said BNP chairperson’s media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan. He was admitted to the hospital on Saturday as his condition sharply deteriorated.
Family sources said Maniruzzaman will be buried at Banani Graveyard today after a namaz-e-janaza at Gulshan Azad Mosque after Asr prayers. His body has now been kept at Square Hospital mortuary. From the hospital, his mortal remains will be taken to his Banani residence around 10am on Tuesday.
Later, the body will be brought to Dhaka University’s Geography and Environment department where his ex-colleagues and students will pay homage to him. His first namaz-e-janaza will be held at Dhaka University’s central mosque after Zohr prayers.
Finally, his second janaza will be held at Gulshan Azad Mosque before the burial.
A confirmed bachelor, Maniruzzaman served as vice-chancellor of Dhaka University from March 24, 1990 to October 31, 1992. Later, he was made Bangladesh Ambassador to Senegal.
