Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday told Parliament that rebel candidates of political parties and intolerance were behind violence in the recent-held staggered Union Parishad (UP) elections, reports UNB. “Stray incidents of violence occurred in some places because of intolerance among rival candidates of the same political parties,” he said. The minister, who is also in-charge of the Election Commission in the House, came up with the remark replying to an un-starred question from independent MP Rustum Ali Faraji (Pirojpur-3). Anisul, however, said the elections to 4,104 UPs were held amid fierce competition from its first phase to the sixth phase. According to media reports, the staggered UP elections, held between March 22 and June 4 last, were marred by violence that left over 110 people killed and thousands of others injured across the country.
