A Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB) committee, formed to investigate the delay in landing of a plane carrying the prime minister on Tuesday, yesterday sought the flight report of a separate Boeing carrier of Bangladesh Biman. The committee has asked Biman to submit the report within the next week.
Meanwhile, two engineers of Biman Bangladesh Airlines were temporarily suspended over the incident. Engineers Rafiqul Islam and Sohel Akter were supposed to check the runway and they were suspended for not doing their duties, according to sources. The body found that some metal debris, which reportedly delayed the landing of the flight (BG 036) of Bangladesh Biman carrying Prime Minister Sheikha Hasina, were from the Boeing 777-300 aircraft of Bangladesh Biman.
That Boeing 777-300 aircraft tried to take off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 5:15pm on Tuesday but failed because of some technical malfunction of its engine. Later, the captain of the flight, Shoaib Ali, cancelled the flight. That particular aircraft was later taken to hanger.
The CAAB probe committee, led by its Flight Safety Director Ziaul Kabir, yesterday inspected the Boeing 777-300 aircraft. The committee later sought last one-month’s report of the flight. Ziaul Kabir said they were looking into the matter seriously.
"Unless we get the engine report of the Boeing aircraft, we cannot be sure about what happened on that day,” he said.
He said that the air traffic control room operator, ‘Qamrul’, was removed immediately after that incident. He will be questioned by the probe committee.
Meanwhile, another four-member probe committee headed by the Dhaka airport Director Zakir Hossain has yet to take any action into the incident.
Sources at the airport, however, questioned the logic behind making Zakir Hossain the head of the probe committee. They said that as the director of operation of the airport, Hossain could not evade the responsibility of what happened on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, independent lawmaker Rustom Ali Foraezi, during yesterday’s session at parliament, asked for a clear explanation from the civil aviation and tourism ministry about the reason behind the delay of the flight carrying Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Rashed Khan Menon, minister of the civil aviation and tourism ministry, was not present at the parliament at that time.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, however, was present at the house.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reached the Dhaka skyline aboard a Biman Bangladesh flight (BG 036) after wrapping her five-day visit to Saudi Arabia. The flight remained stranded at Dhaka’s sky for about 50 minutes, as the runway was not clear. As per the rules, member of special security force (SSF) inspect the runway before any flight carrying the prime minister lands on the Dhaka airport. The SSF members found metal debris on the runway and immediately informed the control tower to delay the flight. Aviation experts said that such metal on the runway could have led to a serious accident.
