Remembering ‘Pop Guru’ on 5th death anniv

Azam Khan (28 February 1950—5 June 2011), the late legendary Bangladeshi singer, certainly created a major impact as far as the music scene in Bangladesh is concerned. Considered to be one of the main pioneers of popular Bangladesh pop music, he was popular as honorific nicknames ‘Pop Guru’ or ‘Pop Samrat’.  
Azam Khan, the Pop Guru, left behind a legacy and even though he is no longer here with us, his exuberance for his profession, his will and determination and the sheer passion with which he captured the hearts and minds of Bangladesh music with his performances and his songs will forever remain.  
Today marks his fifth death anniversary and for that several organisations and private satellite television channels will hold various programmes.
As a part of paying tribute to the legend, Bangladesh Musical Band’s Association (BAMBA) is organising a remembrance ceremony, which will be held today at 6pm at Sangeet Bhaban, Shilpakala Academy, Segun Baghicha. Eminent music director Alam Khan will be present on the occasion as the chief guest, while renowned poet Asad Chowdhury and singer Fakir Alamgir will be present as special guests. Among others, family members of Azam Khan and BAMBA members will also be present to make high spirits of the day.
On the other hand, Boishakhi TV will telecast a special live programme titled ‘Samay Katuk Gaane Gaane’ tonight at 11 pm. In the programme, singer Ziaul Hasan Piyal, Tashmoni and Azam Khan’s daughter Ima Khan will sing the popular numbers of Azam Khan.
The memorable songs such as ‘Ore Saleka, Ore Maleka’, ‘Jibone Kichhu Pabona Re’, ‘Ami Jare Chaire’, ‘Ashi Ashi Bole Tumi’, ‘Obhimani’, ‘Rail liner Bostite’, ‘Hei Allah Hei Allah Re’, ‘Alal O Dulal’ captivated the music lovers of the country and remain popular to this day. Azam Khan is considered as the individual who introduced the pop genre to Bangladeshis and together with pop music contemporaries Fakir Alamgir, Ferdous Wahid, Firoz Shai, Najma Zaman, and Pilu Momtaz, created that impact that would forever leave a legacy.
Azam Khan was also a freedom fighter, and fought for the freedom of Bangladesh in 1971. Following the Liberation War, he made his presence felt in the music scenario with his band Uccharon. Bangladesh Television broadcasted his first concert in 1972.
