Cattle import from Myanmar
Sir,
Bangladesh is a densely populated country. Scarcity of grazing land has made cattle scarce in Bangladesh. Owing to huge population, it needs good number of cattle throughout the year. Bangladesh has mentionable border line with Myanmar at the southeast part. Myanmar is being run by a democratically elected government after a few decades. Bangladesh is trying to developing relationship by increasing import and export of commodities.
Business between these two countries has been increasing in slow pace. Bangladesh needs hundreds of thousands of sacrificial animals such as cow, ox, bull, sheep, goat, etc., especially during occasions like Eid-ul-Azha.
On the other hand Myanmar has huge number of this kind of animals to trade off. If formal trading is accelerated, the cattle rearer in Myanmar could find a good market in Bangladesh for their cattle.
Rural people in Myanmar rear cows mostly for milk production. Oxen and bulls do not provide milk. They want to dispose bull and ox but in Myanmar, it has very little market. Therefore, formal and easy import of cattle from Myanmar is necessary. It will be an economically win-win trading for both countries.
I would, therefore, like to urge to the government of Bangladesh to take up the matter with Myanmar and initiate easy import of cattle from Myanmar to Bangladesh.
