Rainy season to begin by 2nd week of June

The South Western Monsoon winds, the harbinger of the Rainy Season,  may spread over the country by the second week of June and the rains vital to the agriculture are likely to be normal this month. Rains may even cause normal flooding at some places in the north, central and north-eastern regions, a long-range forecast for June by the meteorological department said yesterday. Issued after a meeting of experts from different disciplines alongside an analysis of May weather, data and imageries from Radar and satellites, the forecast said at least 1-2 seasonal low pressures may also brew in the Bay of Bengal. The country experienced 26 percent more than normal rainfall during the May which was above normal in Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barisal Divisions. The rains, however, were normal over Dhaka and Mymensingh due to the influence of Cyclonic storm Roanu that crossed over the Chittagong coast on May 21. It brewed from a low pressure formed in the south western Bay of Bengal. It was followed by a mild to moderate heat wave that blew over some parts of Khulna, Rajshahi and Barisal Divisions during end May, a review of the last month’s weather said.
