At least one villager was killed and 25 others injured, including 7 bullet hit, during a clash with police in Janata Bazar area of Rajapur Union in Bhola on Thursday night. The clash took place after police arrested a local student at about 9pm on Thursday night and allegedly tortured him.
Local sources said a police team of Bhola Sadar Police Station conducted a drive in Janata Bazar area and arrested Mizan Uddin, 20. After Mizan was taken to Rajapur police camp, some policemen physically tortured him. As the news reached the locality, villagers gathered near the police camp and started pelting bricks bats. At one point, police opened fire to disperse the mob and several villagers got hit by bullets. Angry mob, however, lay siege around the police camp and kept the policemen confined till yesterday morning. During the clash, Noman, 25, son of Billal Hossain got hit by a bullet and died on the spot. Eight others hit by bullets were admitted to Bhola Sadar Hospital. Among them, the condition of Sufia Begum, 50, Ejajul, 25, and Rejaul, 20 were critical, said souces. When contacted over the matter, Khairul Bashar, officer in-charge of Bhola Sadar Police Station, said after a negotiation with local leaders, police recovered the body of Noman and sent it to Bhola Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Police fired a total of 75 rubber bullets to disperse the angry mob, he said. A case was filed with the Bhola Sadar Police over the incident.
