Three days are left for the fifth phase of elections in over 700 union parishads (UPs). But at least six people have already been killed and hundred others injured in pre-poll violence.
After the fourth phase was held on May 7, at least four people were killed and scores injured.
In the last four phases, at least 80 people have been killed and several hundred injured before and after polling. The violence is continuing unabated.
Before the fifth phase, six deaths have occurred—one each in Pabna, Munshiganj, Chittagong, Faridpur, Savar (outskirts of Dhaka) and Kishoreganj. Over hundred others were injured.

It has become a major challenge for the Election Commission (EC) to combat violence before and after the polls. The commission is facing criticism from different quarters, including the Awami League, for its "failure" to hold peaceful polls.
Experts said violence on such a large scale was not seen in previous local body elections. This is the first time UP polls are being held under the party banner.
They said violence is increasing because the polls are being held under the party
banner. The entire electoral system is on the verge of destruction as the EC is unable to curb violence and irregularities. If the EC fails to take stern action to stop violence prior to the polls, it would be difficult to check violence and irregularities on the day of election.

The EC said it is doing whatever possible to tackle violence, but each house cannot be guarded.
“We're doing whatever is possible. But it's not possible for us to keep an eye on every house to resist violence,” EC secretary Md Sirajul Islam told The Independent yesterday.
“We've police and magistrates to maintain law and order. But some candidates want to win at any cost, resulting in violence,” he added.
The responsibility falls on the EC as it is conducting the elections and its job is to hold peaceful polls, experts said.
