The eye is the most vital of all the sense organs of humankind. Through the eye we can see the most precious of the gifts of God; this most bounteous and beautiful universe. Impairment of the other sense organs can be overcome in some way or other, through therapy and training in order to subsume the physcal lacuna, but diseases and disorders of the eye are critical. It is true that totally blind people in our country and worldwide can get over their disability through a change of lifestyle and sharpening of the other senses such as hearing and smell. But loss of eyesight can never be cured in the true sense. Furthermore, eye diseases, disorders and accidents can happen right from our birth till death. In the poorer countries like ours, nutritional causes, genetic factors and environmental pollution lead to some common eye diseases such as night blindness, myopia, hypermetropia, and conjunctivitis. Besides, the increase of diabetes cases in Asian countries have led to increased incidence of cataract.
However, worldwide, latest techniques have speeded up and eased the medical treatment and surgery necessary for treatment of eye disorders and diseases. Even in Bangladesh some of the latest techniques for combating eye disorders and diseases are available. In India, Chennai is considered a leading centre for eye treatment in the South Asian region.
