Political instability, murder of foreigners hinder investment: EU

European Union (EU) ambassador in Dhaka Pierre Mayaudon yesterday said, “Political instability, killing of foreigners, and energy crisis are the major barriers to business development and foreign investment in Bangladesh. We want to know what the government is doing about these issues.” He said this during a meeting between the envoys of the EU and commerce minister Tofail Ahmed held at the conference room of the ministry in the capital, sources said. In response to the EU position, commerce minister said, Bangladesh is now a most attractive and safe place for investment. “The government will provide all facilities, including a special economic zone, to foreign investors. Bangladesh is now a more attractive and safer zone for investment among the South Asian countries,” he said. The government has taken a foreign investment-friendly policy decision by offering attractive packages, he said adding that many foreign investors have already expressed their interest in investing in Bangladesh. At a briefing after the meeting, Mayaudon said, “We are interested in investing in Bangladesh, but there are many challenges here. Traders here should pay attention to the issue of transparency in financial transactions.”
