Naeem Islam Jr and Enamul Haque Jr bewildered the batsmen of Gazi Group Cricketers with their web of magic spin when Mohammedan Sporting Club thumped them by seven-wicket win in the lopsided fourth round encounter of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.
By dint of victory, Mohammedan leapfrogged Abahani Limited to place in second position on point table with the better net-run rate behind Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club, who are yet to face any shards. Both Abahani and Mohammedan scripted three triumphs in four games.
Abahani lost to Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by four wickets in Mirpur, while Mohammedan was beaten by Victoria Sporting Club by two wickets at BKSP.
Sent to bat first, Gazi Group Cricketers manage to father a paltry 141 runs before being all-out, after which Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd gunned down the target with 109 balls and seven wickets in hands.
Naeem and Enamul evenly shared eight wickets between them. Enamul Haque Jr conceded 26 runs to pick his four wickets in 6.1 overs.
And Naeem Islam Jr, who took four wickets in earlier match against Legends of Rupganj to be named man of the match, spared 38 runs to claim four wickets in 10 overs and adjudged man of the match for the second time.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and chose to let make first use of his bowlers at the spin-friendly track. His decision finally proved to be right one as Gazi Group’s batters could not get opportunity to establish their domination against the spinners of the Black and White.
Naeem Islam Jr ripped through the top-order and Enamul Haque Jr tore apart the middle- order line-up of the Gazi Group Cricketers, who started losing their wickets at regular interval. Only four batsmen made double figure marks for them. Of them, skipper Alok Kapali top-scored for Gazi with 48 off 67 that stacked with four boundaries and one six.
Shamsur Rahman Shuvo (26), Anamul Haque Bijoy (23) and Saeed Anwar Jr (17) were the other scorers for Gazi Group.
Apart from Naeem Islam Jr and Enamul Haque Jr, Habibur Rahman snapped up two wickets for Mohammedan.
Chasing the scanty target, Mohammedan lost their opener Ezaz Ahmed cheaply. But Shykat Ali in association with Sri Lankan Upul Tharanga hit a 76-run partnership for the second wicket. Shykat, who fell eight runs short of his fifty, walked back to the dressing room having lbw by Alok Kapali. The right-handed opener clubbed 42 off 51 with eight fours.
Upul also missed his half-century just for three runs. He struck the identical number of eight boundaries in his 69-ball 47.
Together with Ariful Haque, an experienced Naeem Islam later strolled home the victory with 18.1 overs to spare, which gave a sparsely-supporters of the Mohammedan tent to cheer about. Naeem remained unbeaten on 18 off 36 with two fours, while Ariful was on 25 not out. Ariful clouted half-a-dozen boundaries in his 33-ball knock.
Alok Kapali, Sajedul Islam and Mohammad Sharif took one wicket apiece for the losing side.
