Beanibazar: Yet another housewife has fallen victim to dowry as she has been tortured to death by her dowry-greedy husband here, reports UNB. Quoting family members, police said Shahjahan Ahmed, 39, a grocer of Kharabhara village married Panna Zahan in 2010. As Panna failed to give birth to any child even after two years into their marriage, Shahjahan married Rekha Begum, 24, daughter of late Abdul Mannan of Fatehpur village in Beanibazar municipality area in 2012, said officer-in-charge of Beanibazar Police Station Zuber Ahmed. Since their marriage, Shahjahan used to demand dowry from Rekha. Her family, including a brother who used to live in London, had provided money to Shahjahan on several occasions. Whenever Rekha refused to meet his demand, he inflicted torture on her. In the meantime, the couple was blessed with a boy, Marjan, now three. On Sunday last, Shahjahan demanded money from Rekha and beat her mercilessly after she refused to entertain his demand, leaving her critically injured. She was taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment.
However, Shahjahan took Rekha to her parents’ house on Monday without completing the treatment. She succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of Tuesday. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to local hospital morgue for autopsy. The body bore several injury marks, said sub-inspector of Beanibazar Police Station Debaswish. Police arrested Panna Zahan, Rekha’s father-in-law Tajamul Ali and mother-in-law Rehana Begum in this connection. However, Shahjahan went into hiding.
