The Awami League's (AL's) joint general secretary, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, yesterday said the next phases of the union parishad (UP) elections would be held in a fairer and more credible manner than the previous phases. “The recently-concluded third phase of the UP elections was fairer than the previous two phases of local government polls. I hope the next phases will be completely flawless,” he said while addressing a press conference at party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office. Hanif also said the ruling AL and the Sheikh Hasina government will extend their all-out support to the Election Commission (EC) to make the next phases of the UP elections faultless. Earlier, at a post-poll briefing on Saturday, Hanif had said the third phase of the UP elections was held in a free, fair and credible manner, following the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The AL announced the names of 733 candidates for the posts of chairpersons, contesting the fifth phase of the UP polls.
