Ruling Awami League won 348 chairman posts, while its arch rival BNP only 59 chairman posts in the 3rd phase elections held on Saturday, reports UNB. With 29 AL chairman candidates elected uncontested, the total number of the party's winning contestants is 377. The unofficial election results of 571 UPs were available in the Election Commission Secretariat till Sunday afternoon, though election was held in 614 UPs in this phase. Besides, 121 independent candidates won chairman posts and HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party gripped 12 chairman posts in the elections, according to the EC's statistics. Director (Public Relations) of EC Secretariat SM Asaduzzaman on Sunday afternoon told UNB that the election results of all UPs has yet to reach from the field. Earlier in the first two phases of elections held in March last, AL won in some 915 UPs, while BNP in 113 ones and independent candidates in 226 UPs.
