Prime University 2nd convocation tomorrow
The Prime University is going to hold its second convocation at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital on April 24. Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid would grace the occasion on behalf of the Chancellor and President of Bangladesh Md Abdul Hamid, a press release said. Besides, education secretary Sohrab Hossain, chairman of University Grants Commission Abdul Mannan and emeritus professor Anisuzzaman and Trustee Board chairman of Prime University engineer Touhidur Rahman would also attend the convocation.
DU introduces new gold medal
Dhaka University today introduced a new gold medal titled ‘Commander Abdur Rouf Memorial Gold Medal and Scholarship’ at the university’s Population Sciences Department. Gitali Hasan, daughter of late Commander Abdur Rouf handed over a cheque for Taka 15 lac to DU Treasurer Professor M Kamal Uddin at the vice-chancellor’s office to introduce the gold medal and scholarship. DU Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Faculty of Social Sciences Dean Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed and Population Sciences Department Chairman Dr Aminul Haque were present on this occasion, among others.Out of the income of this donation, every year one meritorious student who will secure the highest CGPA in BSS (Hons) final examination from the department will be awarded the gold medal while two more students of the department will be given scholarships.
Prof Arefin thanked the donor for introducing the gold medal and scholarships at the university and hoped the students would be highly benefited and encouraged from this donation.
He paid his glowing tribute to the memory of late Commander Abdur Rouf. The vice-chancellor said he (Rouf) was a former naval officer and educationist. Besides, he was one of the organizers of 1971 Liberation War and one of the accused in the ‘Agartala Conspiracy Case’, the VC added. Abdur Rouf was born on November 11, 1939 and died on February 27, 2015.
JU deans polls rescheduled for May 10
The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities rescheduled the ‘dean elections’ to five out of six faculties of the university for May 10 instead of April 30.
‘Dean polls for the Faculties of Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences and Business will be held at Teachers’ Club on the campus from 9am to 2pm on May 10’ said Abu Bakr Siddique, JU registrar also newly appointed returning officer for upcoming election.
Earlier, the dean elections, scheduled on April 30, were postponed as Awami League-backed teachers under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsho o muktijuddher Chetanay Biswashi Pragotesheel Shikhik Samaj’ sent a letter to Vice-Chancellor following the letter for their preparation.
The pro-Awami League and the other of pro-BNP backed panels, senior teachers of JU will contest in the polls.
Mentionable, the expired date of all deans, 6 teacher’s representatives of syndicate and one member for Finance Committee was on October 1, 2014.
Neuroscience Research Centre established at DU
A new centre titled ‘Neuroscience Research Centre’ has been established at Dhaka University (DU) to conduct research on brain related functions.
The first meeting of Executive Council of the centre was held yesterday at the VC’s lounge of the university.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique presided over the meeting while Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences Prof Dr Md Imdadul Hoque, Director of Neuroscience Research Centre Prof Dr Md Khalilur Rahman and Chairpersons of various departments under the Faculty of Biological Sciences addressed it.
Prof. Siddique in his speech urged the faculties and researchers to conduct ‘global standard research’ to face neurological problems of human being.
He hoped that this centre would play an important role in this regard.
Workshop on ‘ensuring standard of edn’ held at DU
A day-long workshop on ‘ensuring standard of education’ was held on Thursday at the conference hall of Institute of Education and Research (IER) at Dhaka University.
     IER organised the workshop under Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) of University Grants Commission (UGC).
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest with the IER Director Professor M Abdul Awal in the chair.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Arefin said IER is playing important role to the development of standard of the country’s education and research.
