18 including 6 cops hurt in pre-poll violence

At least 18 people including six policemen were injured in pre-poll violence over union parishad election campaign in Narail and Mymensingh districts yesterday and on Monday.
In Narail, three police personnel including a Sub-Inspector were injured while trying to pacify the aggressive supporters of two candidates during UP election campaign at Charkekania area of Baoisona union under Kalia upazila of the district on Monday night, reports BSS.
The injured police are Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman, constables Faruque Ahmed and Mahbub Hossain. Seriously injured Constable Faruque Ahmed was taken to Khulna first and from there shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Naragati Thana Jayadul Haque said when Awami League nominated candidate Fokan Mollah brought out campaign procession along with his supporters at Dumuria and Char Dumuria villages, then the supporters of rival candidate Channu Shaikh attacked them.
Receiving information police rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. Taking advantage of the situation miscreants hurled brick bats and stones on police.
A case was filed with Naragati Thana.
Police arrested 27 persons in this connection. Additional police force has been deployed in the area to avoid further clash, OC added.
Our Mymensingh correspondent adds: The election of 11 unions in Ishwarganj upazila is scheduled to be held on April 23.
Quoting local people, Md Badrul Alam Khan, officer-in-charge of Ishwarganj police station said supporters of Jatiya Party candidate Abdul Kader and Awami League candidate Habibur Rahman locked in an altercation during their election campaign at Bhalukber in Sohagi union around 11:30am.
When supporters of both the candidates were on their campaign at Bogaputa of Sohagi Bazar area around 5pm, as a sequel to earlier dispute, they locked in an altercation again. At one state, both groups engaged in clashes with sticks and sharp weapons, leaving 15 people injured of both groups.
Of the injured, three were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Of them, Mujibur Rahman, brother of AL candidate Habibur Rahman was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated, police sources said.
Other injured including two police constables and an assistant sub-inspector were treated locally.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further untoward incident.
Additional police superintendent Hamidul Haque and assistant police superintendent (Gouripur Circle) Md Akhtaruzzaman visited the area.
