A local leader of Awami League was hacked to death by unidentified criminals at Balaishpur village under Laxmipur Sadar upazila on Tuesday night.
The deceased was Mafiz Ullah, 52, of Balaishpur village. He was the organising   secretary of the Bashikpur union unit of AL.
According to sources, a group of criminals hacked Mafiz Ullah while he was returning home from mosque after saying his Esa prayer leaving him dead on the spot. As locals came forward, criminals opened fire and escaped from the scene. On information, Chandraganj and Sadar
police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Laximpur Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Assistant superintendent of police Nasim Miah told The Independent that they have started investigation and will detain the criminals soon.
A case was filed in this connection.
