Coping diabetes with holistic system

Coping diabetes with holistic system

Though the World Diabetes Day generally is observed on November 14 every year to raise awareness about the disease, diabetes had been selected as the theme of this year’s World Health Day, which was observed on April 7 across the world, including in Bangladesh. World Health Organization (WHO) selected the theme “Beat Diabetes” this year. The selection of the theme indicated that how much world attention has been given to the disease.
Under the sponsorship of WHO, the day was observed marking its founding anniversary. Each year, the WHO selects a health issue, which is very important in the global persective. The day was celebrated locally and internationally with different programmes. The main goals of the day’s campaign was to increase awareness about the rise in diabetes, and its staggering burden and consequences, in particular in low-and middle-income countries. It aimed at triggering a set of specific, effective and affordable actions to tackle diabetes. These include steps to prevent diabetes and diagnose, treat and care for people with diabetes, and launching the first Global report on diabetes, which will describe the burden and consequences of diabetes and advocate for stronger health systems to ensure improved surveillance, enhanced prevention, and more effective management of diabetes.
The WHO focused on diabetes because the diabetes epidemic is rapidly increasing in many countries, with the documented increase most dramatic in low- and middle-income countries.
According to the WHO, a large proportion of diabetes cases are preventable. Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. Maintaining normal body weight, engaging in regular physical activity, and eating a healthy diet can reduce the risk of diabetes.
 Diabetes is treatable
Diabetes can be controlled and managed to prevent complications. Increasing access to diagnosis, self-management education and affordable treatment are vital components of the response. Efforts to prevent and treat diabetes will be important to achieve the global Sustainable Development Goal 3 target of reducing premature mortality from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) by one-third by 2030. Many sectors of society have a role to play, including governments, employers, educators, manufacturers, civil society, private sector, the media and individuals themselves.
The number of diabetes affected people has crossed 40 crore in the world. At present, there are about 90 lakh diabetes affected people in Bangladesh. About one lakh new patient is being added to the list every year. The number of diabetes affected people is rising alarmingly each year in lower and middle income countries. In Bangladesh, this disease has dominated among the non-communicable diseases. If effective stes to prevent the disease are not taken right now, experts apprehended that the number of diabetes affected people will exceed 55 crore in the world by 2030.
Experts said a patient can control his/her own diabetes through maintaining a discipline life. People of all ages are being affected by the disease, which is increasing among our people mainly because of lack of awareness.
We are gradually heading towards the urbanization. One of the bad effects of the urbanization is stress. Diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary artery blockage are increasing among our people due to the stress. Physical improvement may take place by treatment, exerchise and change of food habit. But we do nothing for spiritual ad mental development, and no step is taken for reducing the stress or mental pressure. Hence, the patients are not cured fully in the existing treatment system.

It is very important for all of us to reduce the mental pressure, because it is the main causes of different disease and unhappiness.
Holistic system of treatment can play an important role in this regard. The purpose of the hoslitic system is to improve the whole body such as soul, mind and body. It is possible to prevent non-communicable diseases through developing soul, mind and body. The hoslistic system, which is wonderful combination of modern technology and ancient system, is gaining popularity across the world for its capacity to prevent and control of disbetes. The salient features of this system is changing lifestyle, strategy to reduce stress/mental pressure, taking healthy foods, yoga, pranayama, meditation, neurobic gym and acupressure.
The hoslisctic system emphasizes the connection of mind, body, and spirit. The goal is to achieve maximum well-being, where everything is functioning the very best that is possible.
With Holistic Health people accept responsibility for their own level of well-being, and everyday choices are used to take charge of one's own health. The human body has natural healing abilities. Holistic healing and alternative health care solutions support the body in healing itself. This natural system is effective, research-based and accepted worldwide.
According to American Holistic Health Association, holistic health is actually an approach to life. Rather than focusing on illness or specific parts of the body, this ancient approach to health considers the whole person and how he or she interacts with his or her environment.
The holistic approach treats the whole person, ignites the body's internal healing force and stimulates the body's natural abilities to heal itself. Holistic health is harmony and balance within all aspects of self - body, mind, spirit and emotions.
Holistic practitioners use a variety of treatment techniques to help their patients take responsibility for their own well-being and achieve optimal health. Depending on the practitioner's training, these may include: Patient education on lifestyle changes and self-care to promote wellness. This may include diet, exercise, psychotherapy, relationship and spiritual counseling, and more, complementary and alternative therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage therapy, naturopathy, and others.
The Holistic Health Care Centre has been playing a significant role in the last one decade, giving health benefits to large number of coronary artery blockage, high blood pressure and diabetes patients. The initiative has reduced the risk of diabetes, on the other, the diabetes patients, who have been suffereing from the disease for a long time, got relief in their lives. Many of the patients deserted taking insulin while many others are leading their life by reducing the amount of insulin.
Being a lower income country, many of our poor diabetes patients cannot buy medicines. On the other, many inaccessible areas have no diabetes centre. Hence, the patients are approaching towards death due to lack of proper treatment and medicines. On the other hand, rich diabetes patients decline to take huge amount of medicine and insulin.
The hoslistic system has been proved beneficial to the both poor and rich patients, because it is less costly and it has no side-effect.
Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier also asked the physicians to find out treatment system, which can be available with less expenditure. A unique initiative titled ‘Hoslitic Diabetes Club’ was launched at Rabindra Sarobor of Dhanmondi Lake in the capital on the Health Day.
The initiative has been taken up to implement the day’s theme—stay super by beating diabetes. The activities of the Club will be gradullay expanded to other parts of the country to provide health care to people. It is hoped that those, who remain at pre-diabetes stage, will be aware and also get benefits of the Club. Let us raise awareness to control diabetes and be safe.
