LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain yesterday said that a dedicated pond in every village would be dug to facilitate sweet water storage and reduce dependency on groundwater, reports BSS.
“Department of Public Health and Engineering has taken up a project in this regard,” he said while reviewing the under implementation projects of the Local Government and Cooperatives divisions at his ministry here, said an official handout.
Engineer Mosharraf said the groundwater table has been depleting sharply due to over exploitation of groundwater and it has become urgent to find feasible surface water sources to offset overdependence on groundwater.
He reminded concerned officials about the double challenges- finding potential surface water sources for drinking purposes in rural areas while freeing urban folks from water logging during rainy season- and asked them to find cost-effective solutions to these problems.
The minister also asked concerned officials to convey the benefits of “One House and One Firm” concept, spearheaded by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, among masses across Bangladesh and beyond.
Local Government Division Secretary Abdul Maleque and senior officials were present.
