Injured Chhatra League leader dies in prison

A local Chhatra League leader died at Munshiganj General Hospital yesterday morning after falling sick at district jail. The deceased Asif Hawlader, 21, was the acting president of Kola union unit Chhatra League in Sirajdikhan upazila and a student of Dhaka University. Jailer Faridur Rahman Rubel said Asif Hawlader was brought to the jail with head injuries on April 13 in a case of clash. Asif fell sick around 5:00am yesterday and was admitted to the hospital where he died around 11:00am, he added.
Advocate Abu Sayeed, former district BCL general secretary, said Asif had enmity with an expelled leader Yamin. Besides, during the union parishad elections, Asif worked for Awami League-backed chairman candidate Mir Liakat Ali that enraged Yamin who worked for independent candidate Nasir Chowdhury. Yamin and his associates beat up Asif at night on April 12 and handed him over to the police. Asif was sent to jail next day as police did not arrange any treatment for him, he said. Asif’s father Habibur Rahman said, “Nasir’s man beat my son and handed my injured son over to the police. I went several times to file a case in this connection but police refused to record it.” However, officer-in-charge of Sirajdikhan police station Yardous Hasan said legal action will be taken against the culprits after getting complaint in this regard.
