Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested a man from Paltan area of the capital on Tuesday night on charges of offending people’s religious sentiment with his posts on Facebook.
The arrestee was identified as SM Shakhawat Hossain. He was trying to create religious chaos between Muslims and Buddhists through his Facebook posts, said DMP Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam at a press briefing at DMP Media Centre in the capital yesterday.
A case was filed under the information and communication technology act with Paltan police against the so-called editor of an online news portal, he added.
“We believe he was inspired by a vested quarters to publish photographs on his platform of various incidents around the world claiming they were evidence of tortures conducted on Muslims in Myanmar.
During primary interrogation Hossain claimed that he was unable to tolerate the torture on Muslims by Buddhists in Myanmar.s So he ran the campaign on self motivation. He would collect various images himself and post them, DB chief said.
He said they would investigate to find out who were funding the online portal.
DMP Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam alleged that 10-12 news portals were trying to incite communal hatred in the country and that they were keeping close watch on their activities.
