Jamaat leader arrested
RAJSHAHI: Police arrested a local leader of Jamaat-e-Islami at Baneshwar in Puthia upazila on Tuesday on charges of subversive activities.
The arrestee was identified as Mostafa Jalal, ameer of the district (East) unit Jamaat.
Hafijur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Puthia Police Station, said on secret information, a team of police conducted a drive in the area in the afternoon and arrested Jalal who was wanted in several cases.
The cases were filed against him for carrying out subversive activities and vandalism, the OC added.
Farmer’s body recovered
BARISAL: Police recovered the body of a farmer from Chakhar village under Banaripara upazila of the district yesterday morning. The victim was identified as Jamal Hossain, 28, of Madarkathi village of the upazila.
Being informed, a team of police from Banaripara thana rushed to the spot, recovered the body from a ditch of the village and sent it to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue, said Officer-in-Charge of the thana Ziaul Ahasan.
Police suspected that miscreants chopped Jamal to death. A case was filed.
2 lakh Indian bidis seized
SYLHET: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive seized two lakh pieces of Indian bidi, worth Tk2.5 lakh, in Kanaighat upazila on Tuesday night.
BGB sources said on secrete information that a large consignment of Indian bidis would be taken to Bangladesh illegally, a team of BGB 41 battalion launched a drive in Dona border area.
Sensing the presence of the BGB petrol team, the smugglers fled the scene leaving the bidis in a field. Later, BGB members seized the bidis.
