Flower traders busy ahead of Pahela Baishakh

Hundreds of flower traders are passing busy time in Jhenidah ahead of  Pahela Baishakh (Bangla Nababarshya).
 Sources said over 4,000 flower traders and more than 5,000 are engaged to meet the demand for flowers on Pahela Baishakh, which falls on Thursday.  General secretary of Jhenidah flower Kollyan Samity Jamir Hossain said  over 20 to 25 flower laden trucks are leaving for Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal, Sylhet, Narayanganj, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Feni, Comilla and Khulna and 30 districts every day. Kutub Uddin, a farmer of Baliyadanga village in Kaliganj upazila, said a couple of months ago, a bunch of 8-10 big garlands of marigold is now being sold at Tk 180/200 against Tk 120/140, a week ago.
Shah Mohammad Akramul Haque, deputy director of Jhenidah DAE said, “We have not enough facility to preserve the flowers for a long time. He said farmers can pluck flowers from the plant and can sell in the local market three times in a season.
A farmer can earn at least Tk40,000 to Tk50,000 worth of marigold from a bigha of land and Tk70,000 to Tk80,000 taka from cultivation of colour stick flower on one bigha. This year, the flower farmers get bumper production. A total of 2,500 hectares of land in the district were brought under flower cultivation, mainly marigold, this year. The production cost of flower on each bigha was around Tk 16,000 to Tk18,000 this season.
