Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan yestreday said stern action will be taken against those who will try to create anarchy in the name of besieging Banshkhali upazila office, reports UNB. The minister came up with the warning at a views-exchange meeting with local journalists after the inauguration of a new fire station in Boalkhali upazila yesterday noon. Earlier on Friday, the Committee to Protect Homestead and Graveyard in Gandamara threatened to lay a siege to the Banshkhali upazila office on Sunday wearing shrouds if the government does not cancel the Gandamara coal-fired power plant by 6pm on Saturday.
The Home Minister said there is no problem if they observe peaceful programmes but any chaos and anarchy in the name of movement will not be tolerated. Asaduzzaman Khan said they are looking whether there was any vested quarter behind the movement and investigating who actually provoked the killings.
Responding to a question over the recent murder of online activist Nazimuddin Samad, the minister said it would not be right to make any comment at this stage of investigation.
Jagannath University student and online activist Nazimuddin Samad, 26, was killed by some unidentified assailants at Ikrampur of Sutrapur in the capital on Wednesday night. He was also the information and research secretary of Sylhet unit of Bangabandhu Jatiya Juba Parishad and an activist of Sylhet Ganajagaran Manch.
Four people including two brothers were killed in police firing at Gandamara village in Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong last Monday as locals protested the construction of a coal-based power plant in the area. The deceased were indentified Murtaza Ali, 55, his brother Anwarul Islam, 44, Zaker Ahmed, 60, and Zakir.
At least 19 people, including 11 policemen, were also injured in the incident.
Three cases were filed with the Banshkhali Police Station over the incidents. Family members of the victims filed two cases on Tuesday while police filed the other case.
Bother of the deceased Anowarul Islam and Mortuza Bashir filed a murder case mentioning names of six people and against unidentified 1,400-1500 people.
Monowara Begum, wife of another victim Zaker Hossain, filed second case with the police station. She did not mention name of anyone in the case statement.
Banshkhali police sub-inspector Bahar Mia filed a case against 57 identified people and 1,000 unidentified people.
