Barisal district fisheries office and Bangladesh Coast Guard in joint drive sized 20 maunds of illegally netted jatka (hilsa fry less than 10 inches in length) from Kalabadar River near Bukhainagar under Barisal metropolitan yesterday. Md Nazrul Islam, operation officer of Coast Guard Barisal unit, said being informed district fisheries department and coast guard conducted the drive in different rivers yesterday morning and sized the jatka and 3-kilometer long net named ‘pai’, worth over Tk 3 laka from a fishing trawler. The seized Jatka were distributed to different orphanages and madrasas through district fishery office and the coast guard official said. Bimal Chandra Das, officer (Hilsa) of fishery directorate Barisal office, said that the government has imposed a two months’ ban on catching, selling and transportation of all types of fish from the Padma and Meghna rivers from March 1 to ensure safe spawning and protecting of fish resources. But violating the ban, a section of fisher led by local influential is netting jatka in different rivers of Barisal. However, no one was arrested in this connection.
