Enforced disappearance takes severe form: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said the incidents of enforced disappearance have taken severe form in the country. “No one is above the law. The trial of incidents of enforced disappearance must be held some day,” he warned, while speaking at a doa mahfil at BNP central office in capital’s Naya Paltan. BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal organised the function to mark one year of the disappearance of missing leader Tejgaon College unit president Aminul Islam Jakir. Terming enforced disappearance as a major crime against humanity, Fakhrul said country’s people never saw such high number of incidents of enforced disappearance that took place during the last few years. He claimed that over 500 BNP leaders and activists became victims of enforced disappearance. “The culture of enforced disappearance began with the incident of disappearance of BNP leader and former ward commissioner Chowdhury Alam. Many leaders including Ilias Ali were also the victims of enforced disappearance,” he said. Their only offence was that they were taking part in the movement for freedom of expression, restoration of democracy and fundamental rights, he added. The BNP leader said the people are getting united to get rid of such a situation and to get a state free from enforced disappearances. He also expressed his frustration as there was no significant progress in the Tonu murder case. BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, among others, spoke on the occasion. Meanwhile, in a statement, Mirza Fakhrul protested and condemned the government for implicating Amardesh Editor Mahmudur Rahman in a new case.
