Two officials of Bangladeshi non-governmental ogranisation Brac, who were abducted in Afghanistan on March 17 were released yesterday. Both Haji Swakat, 50, and Md Sirajul Islam Sumon, 37 returned unharmed to Brac Kabul office after 18 days of their abduction, Brac said in a media release, reports UNB.
Regional director of BRAC Int’l, Asia, Jalal Uddin Ahmed said the release was ensured by the mediation of the local Surah leaders. “We’re very happy on their safe return. Both have spoken to their respective families in Pabna,” he said. Jalal went to Kabul right after the abduction on March 17.
Executive director of Brac International Faruque Ahmed said, “We’re relieved that our colleagues are safe and unharmed. From the very beginning, ensuring their safe release was our top priority and I’m glad that we’ve been able to achieve this. We’re grateful to the families for their patience during the last two weeks.”
