Lightning kills 5 in 3 districts

A total of five people were killed by lightning strike in three districts yesterday. In Netrakona, three madrassa students were killed as a streak of lightning struck them at Ghagra in Purbadhala upazila on Sunday night, reports UNB. The deceased were identified as Masum, 15, a resident of Agia village, Rafat, 15, of Giriasha village, and Masum, 15, of Ghagra Charpara village. All of them are students of Ghagra Chourasta Fazil Madrasah. Officer-in-charge of Purbadhala Police Station Abdur Rahman said the trio was struck by the thunderbolt around 9pm as they went out of the dormitory of their madrassa to respond to the call of nature, leaving them dead on the spot.
Our Kishoreganj correspondent adds: A madrasa student was killed and three schoolgirls were injured in lightning strikes in Karimganj and Nikli upazilas of the district yesterday. The deceased was identified as Md. Faruk Mia, 13, son of Kabir Uddin of Sutarpara village and student of local Sutarpara Darus Salam Hafizia Madrasa. The injured are Navana  Akter Happy, 15, her sister Shamima Akter Paly, 14, daughters of Aminul Islam of Nuapara village in Nikli and class nine students of AB Nurjaha High School in Nikli sadar and Turki Akter, 14, daughter of Altaf Uddin of the same village and class nine student of the same school. Police and local sources said Faruk was struck by lightning and killed on the spot while he was fishing at nearby stream at 11:00am during rain. Meanwhile, three schoolgirls were struck by lightning during rain at Nuapara in Nikli while they were going to school. They have been admitted to local Nikli upazila health complex. In Jamalpur, a housewife died as a thunderbolt struck her at Bakshiganj upazila of the district yesterday morning, reports BSS. The victim was identified as Rezia Khatun, 42, wife of Moulavi Miah of Uzan Panatiya Para village under Battazor union of Bakshiganj upazila of the district. Police said Rezia Khatun was working in the kitchen when a thunder bolt struck her. She died on the spot at about 10.30 am. Police recovered the body from her house.
