A Dhaka court yesterday sent police sub-inspector Ratan Kumar to jail, after rejecting his bail plea, in a case filed for sexually harassing a female private university student in the capital.
Judge Md Salehuddin Ahmed of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 passed the order. Earlier in the day, Ratan Kumar surrendered before the court and sought bail, but the court turned down his bail plea. The tribunal issued an arrest warrant against SI Ratan Kumar in the case on February 16.
On February 1, the victim, a first-year female student of ASA University, filed a case against Ratan Rumar. In her complaint, she alleged that SI Ratan and two police constables stopped her rickshaw in front of Japan Garden City on Ring Road in Mohammadpur as she was on her way to a bookstore at Nurjahan Road. The policemen accused her of being a Yaba peddler. Despite repeated pleas to have her body search conducted by a female official or in the presence of other women of the neighbourhood, or in a police station, these were ignored by the SI and they took her to a shop where they conducted a search and sexual harassment, she claimed.
