After battling with deadly cancer quite for a long time, actress Parveen Sultana Diti--who was renowned for her eternal beauty and versatile acting skills in the country’s film industry--passed away yesterday. Born on March 31, 1965 in Sonargaon of Narayanganj, Parveen Sultana Diti had acted on both big and small screens besides working as a model in many television commercials in her lifetime. Through a talent hunt contest for the new face, Diti engaged herself with the country’s film industry. Diti made her acting debut with the film titled ‘Dak Diye Jai’ directed by Udayan Chowdhury in 1984. But very unfortunately, the film did not see its release. Her first released film was ‘Ami-e Ustad’; the film was directed by Ajmal Huda. Actor Ujjal was seen playing the role of her elder brother in the film. Then, she acted over 200 films in her career.
Diti acted in the role of the wife of actor Alamgir in the film ‘Swami-Strir Juddho’ directed by Subhash Dutta, which earned her the National Film Award in 1986.
During 80s, Ilias Kanchan and Diti were the most popular pair in the film industry and they together had appeared in over 50 films. She had also successful collaboration with actor Sohail Chowdhury, whom she fell in love with and got married in 1986. They had successfully continued their happy married life until Sohail Chowdhury was killed in gunshot in 1998. The couple left behind a daughter named Lamia Chowdhury and a son, Shafayet Chowdhury.
Diti-acted notable films are-‘Dui Jibon’, ‘Bhai Bondhu’, ‘Kathin Protishodh’, ‘Sneher Pratidan’, ‘Ajker Hangama’, ‘Kalia’, ‘Charam Aghat’, ‘Mukti’, ‘Char Satiner Ghar’, ‘Lady Inspector’, ‘Sesh Opahar’, Hira Moti’ and others. Diti also acted in Indo-Bangla joint venture film titled ‘Priyo Satru’ opposite of celebrated Indian actor Prosenjit.
Besides showing her immense acting ability, Diti demonstrated her talent as a potential director. She made her directorial debut with the tele-drama titled ‘Khunsutike Dilam Chhuti’ under her own production house named DLD. With the story written by Rumman Rashid, popular actors Apurba and Monalisa acted in the tele-drama. Then, she was seen making special tele-dramas based on the story about mother every year on the occasion of Mother’s Day. She directed many tele-dramas and telefilms in her career.
Diti-acted last tele-drama was ‘Meghe Dhaka Shohor’, written by Rudra Mahfuz and directed by Sakhawat Manik. On the other hand, Diti-starrer last drama serial was ‘Life in a Metro’, written by Rudra Mahfuz and directed by BU Shubho.
Directed by Rashed Shamim Sham, ‘Brishtir Kanna’ was the last tele-drama from Diti’s production house DLD. Diti herself acted in this project on July 22 last year, and she was fallen sick on July 24. Next day, she was taken to Chennai for immediate treatment, where she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and underwent surgery at India’s Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology to remove a brain tumour on July 29 last year.
Besides acting and directorial tasks, Diti took the chance to introduce herself as a singer. She released her first solo album titled ‘Tomar O Chokhe’ about two decades ago, while her second solo album ‘Fire Jeno Asi’ released in 2011. Before she died, the actress was suffering from Parkinson’s disease after cancer and tumour. She was in a critical condition as she was in the second stage of Parkinson’s during her admission to United Hospital in Gulshan.
Actor Ujjal expressed his deep shock over the death of Diti, “I played the role of her brother in her first released film ‘Ami-e Ustad’. She played the character of my wife in her last released film ‘Raja Babu’. It is really very shocking that Diti left us forever. This is true that artistes have to fight, struggle a lot in their life. Diti had that courage. Diti had won over the battle in real life, but she defeated by the deadly cancer. May almighty grant her Jannah.”
Babita said, “It can be said that Diti and I were the member of the same family. After the tragic death of Sohail, she had to go through a tough time to raise her children in a proper manner. Though she was junior than me, we had a very friendly relationship. From my own production house, I worked with her in the film ‘Chandidas and Rajakini’. She was a very dedicated artiste. I acted with her in several films, including ‘Dushi’, and ‘Char Satiner Ghor’.”
“During my last visit to her at the hospital, she kissed me embracing me tightly—I will never forget this memory”, she added.
Ilias Kanchan said, “All of us have to leave like Diti one day. Diti was a wonderful co-artiste of mine. I pray for her that may almighty forgive her all sins and shower His blessings upon her.
