Trader killed as BCL groups clash in Ctg

A businessman was shot dead during a clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) over establishing supremacy in  Kamal Gate area under Sadarghat Police early yesterday. The victim was identified as jute businessman Abdul Zahed, 45, son of Abdur Razzak, local resident of Kamal Gate of Sadarhgat area in Chittagong. Police sources informed that the clash was the result of a longstanding rivalry between local BCL leaders Royal and Anis. At around 12:30am on Tuesday, the two groups engaged in crossfire. Zahed, a follower of Royal, was killed by the rival group in the battle, police said, quoting his family.
Local people took him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where the on-duty doctor declared him dead at around 2am, said CMCH police outpost sources. Police arrested BCL activist Abdul Majid in connection with the incident.
“We suspect the clash was related to establishing of supremacy at Kamal Gate. We have held one person and are quizzing him over the incident. We hope to soon unearth the reason behind the murder,” said Moinul Islam Bhuiyan, Officer-in-Charge of Sadarghat Police Station.
