A tribunal in Jessore yesterday sentenced five people to death and four others to life term imprisonment for killing schoolboy Miraj district in 2013, reports UNB. The condemned convicts were Zahid Hasan Milon, 30, son of Abdul Haq, Mahsin Reza Shaheen, 27, son of Yusuf, Mamun Chowdhury Mukul, 28, son of Golam Hossain, Rubel, 27, son of Abdul Khalek, Shohag, 28, son of Shukur Ali of Laujani village in Jhikorgaccha upazila of Jessore district. Besides, the lifers were Iqbal Hossain, 30, Rashida Bgum Janki, 40, mother-in-law of Iqbal, Hazrat Ali, 45, father-in-law of Iqbal, residents of Narangali village in Jhikorgaccha upazila and Abul Kashem, 28, son of Nurul Haq of Laujani village. The tribunal also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer, one year more rigorous imprisonment. Of the convicts, Mamun, Mahsin, Kashem and Hazrat Ali were tried in absentia. According to the prosecution, Reazul Islam Miraj, a class VI student of Jhikorgaccha High School and son of Mizanur Rahman of Narangali village, was kidnapped by the convicts on November 11, 2013. Later, the kidnappers demanded Tk 25 lakh from Miraj’s father over phone on November 21. On November 23, Miraj was found dead at Narangali village. Khabir Hossain, sub-inspector of DB police submitted, submitted a chargesheet against 12 people on May 31, 2014. The case was shifted to Khulna Speedy Trial Tribunal on April 5, 2015. After examining the records and 28 witnesses, Khulna Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge MA Rob Hawladar handed down the verdict.
