A 17-month old baby was stabbed and injured by rivals at Chandipasha village in Nandail upazila of the district yesterday morning.
The victim was identified as Bithi, daughter of Deen Islam, a day labourer of Chandipasha.
Nandail police officer-in-charge Md Ataur Rahman said there had been a dispute over 9-decimal of land going on for long between Deen Islam and his neighbour Md Shahjahan alias Puitya Shahjahan, a small businessman.
Deen constructed a small dwelling on the disputed land a few days ago; but Shahjahan and his men allegedly vandalised it, police said.
When Deen went to the disputed land with a view to re-construct the house at around 11am yesterday, Shahjahan and his men went the spot and locked in an altercation with him over the issue.
At one stage, Deen fled the place when Shahjahan and his men attempted attack him with machetes. As the gang failed to harm Deen they entered into his house and snatched away his 17-month old baby girl and stabbed her, said the police official quoting the girl’s mother Beauty Begum.
Seriously injured Bithi was first taken to Nandail Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital around 1pm for better treatment.
She was operated upon soon after the admission, the hospital sources said adding the girl is in unconscious state; but her condition is improving gradually.
The girl has suffered deep wounds in her body, said Dr Moinuddin Khan at the emergency department of the hospital.
Police have visited the spot and are making raids at some places to arrest the attackers, said the OC.
