‘Aranyak’ to be staged at Mahila Samity today

Theatre troupe Aranyak Natyadal will stage its 54th production ‘Bhangabanga’, written by thespian Mamunur Rashid and directed by Faiz Zahir, at the Mahila Samity Mancha today, as a part of month-long theatre festival titled ‘Bhanga-Gora Natya Utsab’. Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, in association with Ministry of Cultural Affairs, has organised the festival at the Dr Nilima Ibrahim auditorium – popularly known as Mahila Samity Mancha with the slogan ‘Manche Natok Dekhun, Oitihasik Mahila Samity Manche Asun’.
The story of the tragic-comedy ‘Bhangabanga’ is based in a village on the Bangladesh-India border in Benapole following  the partition in 1947. It portrays the people of Benapole (Bangladesh) and Haridaspur (India). Several of Tagore’s characters like Bishu Pagla, Malini, Nandini, Bosonto Roy, Aparna, Nabin, Raja and others are involved in small business like trafficking, prostitution, among others. Tagore’s writings and songs are referenced in ‘Bhangabanga’, as some of his songs are featured. It includes the love story between Raja of Benapole and Malini of Haridaspur. The play comes to a major climax when it is shown that an unknown person who has arrived intends to visit Patisar, in Bangladesh. That person turns out to be none other than the legendary Rabindranath Tagore who wishes to travel without any visa and passport to Bangladesh by boat.
