Student escapes killing bid

Criminals tried to kill a school student at Choto Moisha High School in Sakhipur Upazila in Tangail district yesterday.
They, numbering five, blindfolded Ashik Mia 14, a student of class-VII, inside a toilet of the school and tried to cut his throat with a glass. They could not kill the boy because of sudden arrival of assistant teacher of the school Noor-e-Alam there.
Students of the school caught hold of Md Joj Mia 14, Zahid Hasan 16, Monir Hosen 17 and Sumon Mia 11 and handed over to police. One Sujan 14 managed to escape the spot.
Ashik has been admitted to Sakhipur hospital.
Officer In-Charge (Investigation) of Sakhipur Police Station Maksudul Alam said the five youths tried to kill Ashik over a previous enmity. Mukter Ali, father of Ashik has lodged a case with Sakhipur police station implicating five criminals. The arrestees have been sent to jail.
150 rare species tortoises seized

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) seized 150 tortoises of a rare species from Mandartala area in Sadar
upazila of Jessore district early yesterday.
RAB-6 sources said tipped off that some rare species tortoises were being smuggled into the country from India, a team of the elite force conducted a drive in the area and intercepted a truck at about 12:30am.
Sensing the presence of the RAB members, the smugglers managed to flee from the scene.
Later, the RAB members recovered 150 tortoises of a rare species, stuffed in eight sacks, after searching the vehicle. The seized tortoises were handed over to the Forest Department. A case was filed in this connection.
2 bakery managers jailed

A mobile court in Mymensingh sentenced managers of two bakeries to seven days of imprisonment each in Muktagacha upazila town for using harmful chemicals in food items.
The court also fined the two and another one during a drive. The mobile court, led by Dr Umme Afsari Johra, Muktagacha upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), raided different areas in Muktgacha and found use of chemicals in producing bakery items, said sources.
Managers of Dhaka Liton Confectionary Tofazzol Hossain, 35, and Swapon Saha, 40, of New Mina Bakery were jailed for seven days each. The mobile court also sealed off New Mina Bakery. The court also realised fines worth Tk 100,000 from the three bakeries, including the two, sources said.
The court also seized a large quantity of tainted bakery items from the three bakeries and burnt those at upazila parishad premises.
