Govt obstructs Tarique’s return to country, says Fakhrul

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) yesterday alleged that the government is standing in the way of senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh by implicating him in several “false cases”. “Tarique Rahman is in exile now. A number of false cases was filed against him. False propaganda is being carried out against him. A conspiracy is also being hatched to keep him out of politics,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He was addressing a doa mahfil organised by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at the party headquarters at Naya Paltan in the city to mark the 10th anniversary of Tarique Rahman’s imprisonment. Fakhrul also alleged that the conspiracy has been hatched against Tarique Rahman to crush the politics of the nationalist forces. “The 1/11 conspiracy was hatched to totally deprive the country of political leadership by removing the tried and tested political leaders from politics,” he said.
Fakhrul claimed that Tarique Rahman had been a victim of the conspiracy as he had imparted a new dimension to politics.
The programme was presided over by JCD president Rajib Ahsan. Abdullah Al Noman, Fazlul Haque Milon, Khairul Kabir Khokan, Nazimuddin Alam, ABM Mosharraf Hossain, Rafiq Sikder and others were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, there was a scuffle between two factions of the JCD following the distribution of sweets after milad and doa mahfil. Around 12 activists from the two factions were involved in the fracas. Some activists sustained minor injuries. The situation was brought under control following the intervention of senior party leaders.
