A writ petition was filed yesterday with the High Court seeking its directive upon the authorities concerned to refrain from collecting information of landlords and tenants dwelling in Dhaka city. On February 29, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) asked the home-owners of the city to submit personal information on tenants along with other information to the local police by March 15. Lawyer Jotyirmoy Barua, in his petition, prayed to the High Court to issue a rule upon the authorities concerned to explain why collection information about Dhaka metropolitan dwellers should not be declared illegal.
He also sought the HC’s directives to preserve the information already collected and not use them until a specific law is formulated in this regard.
The writ petition alleged without any legal basis, the DMP has asked the landlords to give personal information of people living in their houses by March 15. Secretaries of law and home ministries, inspector general of police and DMP commissioner have been made respondents in the petition. After filing the petition, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua told The Independent that he would move before the HC for hearing on the petition next week.
Since November last, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) began collecting information from home owners. Specific forms were distributed to landlords asking them to make their tenants fill the form.
