One of the most surprising hits of 2015, Kekkai Sensen took almost everyone by storm with its frantic, funny and high octane action and humour. The main thing going for this little series pre-launch was that the original manga was by the creator of Trigun, and the director of the amazing Kyousougiga teamed up with the critically acclaimed Studio BONES to bring something new. Unfortunately, the surprise success of Kekkai Sensen brought along more pressure on the studio to possibly continue the series. This led to the last few episodes being delayed, with the finale being delayed indefinitely. This hiatus did not end until several months later, when BONES finally released the quite long finale.
For starters, the plot takes a new spin on a realistic setting. Due to a magical disaster set some years prior to the beginning of the show, the real world and the outerworld merged and collapsed around New York City, creating a fog that ensures barely anything enters or leaves the city. It also brought along a ton of alien and foreign creatures. That did not stop the city from keeping its spirit, as soon humans and outerworlders alike began to live in relative harmony. To ensure this harmony is maintained, a clandestine organization known as Libra keeps the balance and solves any crimes related to such activities. The protagonist is Leonardo Watch, a young boy eager to join Libra, with the ulterior motive of finding and rescuing his sister.
The overall series is absolutely hectic and never misses a beat with either its comedy or action. Typical BONES animation with an amazingly varied score easily immerses the viewer into the mysterious Manhattan the series plugs as its biggest feature. The biggest issue viewers might take however is in the finale. For all the waiting, many did not find it too worth it, but others also thought it was a fitting end. Now that the entire show is out however, it might be the best time to binge this amazing treat of an anime.
