The formal trial of the sensational 7-murder case in Narayanganj began yesterday with the deposition of a witness in one of the two cases filed over the gruesome murders, reports UNB. Bijoy Kumar Paul, complainant of a case and son-in-law of slain lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker, testified for two and half hours before the District and Session’s Court of Judge Syed Enayet Hossain. The court adjourned the deposition until March 7 following a petition filed by Khokan Saha, counsel for prime accused Nur Hossain and sacked Rab officials Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and Lt Commander MM Rana.
The lawyer filed the time-petition as they were yet to collect necessary documents to cross-examine the witness, said adv Shakhawat Hossain Khan, counsel for the complainant.
Meanwhile, the court will record testimony in the other case filed by Selina Islam Beauty, wife of slain Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, on March 3.
Twenty-three of the 35 charge-sheeted accused, including Nur Hossain, Tareque Sayeed, MM Rana and another dismissed Rab officer Major Arif Hossain, were produced before the court during the hearing on Monday.
On Apr 27, 2014, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of Narayanganj. At the same time, senior lawyer at district Judge's Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka. The bodies of six people, including those of Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the Shitalakhya River on Apr 30. The following day, the body of another person was also recovered from the river.
