Nurunnahar Begum, a victim of brutalities by husband, is fighting for her life at Jhenidah Sadar Hospital. Shahidul and his co-wife Rahima used to torture Nurunnahar, 32, at their Paglakanai rented house in Jhenidah town. Nurunnahar, daughter of Yusuf Ali of Bakra-beal village in Satkania upazila of Chittagong, said her parents gave her marriage to van-puller Shahidul Islam of Hazra village in Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat about 14 years ago. After seven years of marriage, Shahidul took Rahima Khatun as his second wife.
Local people said Shahidul and Rahima have been torturing Nurunnahar, mother of two children, for the past 20/25 days. About seven days ago, Shahidul and Rahima tied Nurunnahar with ropes and started scratching her body with blades.
They also tortured her with hot iron rod. They also used hammer to torture the housewife. Hearing screaming on Wednesday night, neighbours rescued Nurunnahar and sent her to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital for treatment.
Medical officer of Jhenidah Sadar Hospital Debashish Roy said the condition of Nurunnahar is critical. Officer-in-Charge of sadar police station Hasan Hafizur Rahman said both Shahidul and Rahima went into hiding soon after the incident. A case was filed in this connection.
