Power Man and Iron Fist #1

Power Man and Iron Fist #1

It feels like it’s been so long since we’ve had these two truly together fighting the evil forces in the world. Things have changed and they’ve both been through a lot. Even the idea of fighting for the innocent and charging them feels like an odd concept. Yet seeing these two together makes you feel like everything is just as it should be.
David Walker has come on board and seamlessly brings the two heroes back together. While helping out someone from their past, they get involved in a pretty big tussle, and it appears this is just the beginning.
Walker has a great grasp on the characters. Luke Cage is now married and has a daughter. Danny Rand may have been through a bit in his previous series, but he still appears to be the same. This goes to show how some relationships or partnerships work. Sometimes one member begins to grow in a different direction.
What it comes down to is we can’t have the Power Man and Iron Fist we had before. Walker knows and understands this. We see how things have changed and Walker handles it realistically as well as with some humor. Their interaction and the way they talk to each other just feels so natural. These two aren’t looking to save the entire world. They’re just trying to do the right thing in their own little corner of the Marvel Universe.
Sanford Greene brings a great vibe to the book. Again, there’s a natural feel to the way the characters carry themselves and how they move about the page. Lee Loughridge’s colors adds some warmth to the book. You can see that Luke is trying to keep things casual while Danny is determined to make this an immediate continuation of their past adventures. With so much of this book hinging on their relationship, it’s good to see it may not be entirely perfect.
Because the two characters are in different places now than they were before, it will be interesting to see how this series progresses. The book is called Power Man and Iron Fist, but of course we have to wonder what role will Jessica Jones have? It’s great she and Luke have a daughter, but we don’t want to see her just taking care of Dani while Luke goes off on crazy adventures with Danny. This book also doesn’t go for a big splashy comic book angle. It feels like pure Power Man and Iron Fist action.
Power Man and Iron Fist is a comic that doesn’t try hard to accomplish its goals. We’re so used to seeing big gimmicky action or twists to make a comic feel it has an explosive amount of energy. David Walker and Sanford Greene instead focus on telling a story with some cool characters. The interactions and actions have a natural feel to them. This subdued approach really makes you appreciate the storytelling aspect of the book. By the time you finish reading, you’ll discover that the fate of the Marvel Universe may not be hanging in the balance, but you will be hooked and want to see what happens next.
