Usually when something gets adapted into an anime, it is more than likely a rather recent manga, game or the occasional light novel. Very rarely will there be an adaptation of a piece of fiction that no one would think about. Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider is one such new show, having been adapted from a 20 year old novel by Hiroshi Mori. The story follows university associate professor Sohei Saikawa and the daughter of his mentor Moe Nishinosono. After encouragement from the latter about meeting the reclusive genius Shiki Magata, the two plan a trip with their seminar group to the island where she resides. Once the two check in to visit her however, mysterious occurrences befall and Magata herself is found murdered.
For the most part, the series focuses on the main mystery of solving Dr. Magata’s murder, which applies the classic “locked room mystery” premise. Other related premises include the good doctor’s sketchy history of murdering her own parents at a young age, and the inner machinations of her mind and ideals. One of the best features of Perfect Insider is the dialogue and writing, as all the characters interact with each other as naturally as possible given the circumstances. The production qualities are also top notch as every detail in both art and sound is carefully crafted to make each scene a wonder to watch.
By the end of story the mystery amps up, implementing the most outrageous answer to the mystery while still keeping within the logical bounds assumed. Some of the tech does seem more on the weird side, and some might even feel the final reveal is too weird. Anyone hankering for a new mystery show will not go wrong here however, as The Perfect Insider manages to stay consistent and end satisfyingly on most accounts.
