A Jhalakati court yesterday summoned The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam to appear before it on March 31 next in connection with a defamation case, reports UNB. District Senior Judicial Magistrate M Zahed Ahmed issued the order following the submission of a primary probe report on the case. District information officer Hasibul Hasan submitted the report to the court on Tuesday stating that the speech of Mahfuz Anam was found to be true. Earlier on February 16, Jhalakati Bar Council member Advocate Boni Adam filed the Tk 4 core defamation case against Mahfuz Anam for publishing ‘confusing’ and ‘defamatory’ reports in his daily on Awami League President Sheikh Hasina during the military-backed caretaker government. According to the complainant, Mahfuz Anam published reports against Awami League President Sheikh Hasina based on information provided by DGFI without any scrutiny in 2007. The editor of the leading English daily in a television talk-show confessed to running such stories in his newspaper.
